The short version
The gulf coast's summer thunderstorm is machinery. On most summer afternoons the land heats faster than the sea, the sea breeze pushes inland through the day, and where that moist push collides with the peninsula's other coast's breeze, the sky builds and lets go, most often from mid-afternoon. The storms are loud, brief, local and productive: an hour of theater, then a rinsed evening. Plan the beach for morning, lunch long, errands for the storm window, and the evening for the payoff.
The sea-breeze machine
By late morning the peninsula is hotter than the water on either side of it, and both coasts' sea breezes begin their push inland. Somewhere over the middle of the state they meet, and the collision has nowhere to go but up. The towers you watch building over the gulf at noon are the day writing its afternoon in advance.
What that buys a visitor is predictability. The storm is rarely a surprise and rarely an all-day affair: it announces itself, arrives with theater, drops its rain hard and locally, and moves on. Half an hour after the last rumble the pavement is steaming and the evening has been washed.
Planning around a rhythm
Take the water in the morning, when the gulf is glass and the sky is still deciding. Let lunch run long through the heat of the day. Keep the storm window, roughly mid-afternoon, for the nap, the book, the shops, or the porch with the show on. Then take the evening, which is the day's second beach and often its better one.
The only real rule is lightning's: when the sky goes to work, get off the sand and out of the water without negotiating. The storm keeps its schedule whether or not the beach agrees.
