September is the gulf coast's quietest month and its warmest water: the crowds leave with the school year and the sea holds everything August gave it. It is also the heart of hurricane season, which is exactly why it stays quiet, and it asks three things of a traveler: flexible plans, a watched forecast, and respect for the season. Give it those and you get the coast, more or less, to yourself.
The month nobody books
The beaches empty in the first week of September the way a theater empties: all at once, for reasons that have nothing to do with the show. School terms start, the summer families go home, and the coast exhales. What they leave behind is the warmest water of the entire year, because the gulf spends all summer banking heat and September is when the account is fullest.
The light changes too. The air dries by degrees, the afternoon storms grow less punctual and more theatrical, and the sunsets run longer through the leftover moisture. Restaurants that ran a wait all summer seat you at the window. It is the month the coast belongs to the people who live on it, and to whoever else took the hint.

September is quiet for an honest reason: it is the statistical heart of the Atlantic hurricane season, and the gulf is part of the Atlantic's arithmetic. Most days of most Septembers on any given stretch of this coast are ordinary, but the season is not to be argued with, and pretending otherwise is how a good month gets a bad name.
