The short version
The gulf beach towns take the Fourth of July seriously: municipal fireworks over the water, boat parades in the passes, and every beach access full by late afternoon. The trick is to decide early which evening you want. Watching means staking sand near a pier show by six with a chair and a cooler. Hiding means a house on the quiet end, dinner on the porch, and the show on the horizon in miniature, which is its own kind of seat.
How the night works
Most of the beach towns shoot their fireworks over the gulf itself, from a pier or a barge, which means the show reflects off the water and the whole west-facing shoreline is the gallery. The crowds are real but good-natured: families dug in since afternoon, radios low, the smell of charcoal drifting up the accesses. Parking fails completely by early evening; the trolleys and a pair of walking shoes do not.
On the water it is boat parade day. The passes fill with flags and pontoons from noon, the sandbar anchorages raft up, and the marine patrol has its one long working day of the summer. If you are on a boat, anchor early and plan to stay put through the show; the channel afterward is not where you want to learn night navigation.
Watching it, or not
To watch properly, commit: chairs on the sand near the show by six, dinner packed, children allowed to go feral until the first shell goes up. It is loud, communal, unpolished, and genuinely good, and once a year that is exactly the right register.
To hide, take the other end of the island. The quiet blocks stay quiet, the porch stays yours, and at nine the horizon lights up in silence, a string of small bright blooms from three towns at once. Some parties plan their whole week around being in the crowd. The ones who plan around avoiding it may have the better seat.
