The short version
The first morning of a stay on the Madeira bay side starts before the house wakes: coffee carried to the dock, the fleet idling out through the pass in single file, pelicans commuting the other way, and the day's heat still a rumor. It lasts perhaps forty minutes and sets the register for the entire week, which is why the houses with east-facing docks are quietly the coast's best alarm clocks. Nothing is arranged, nothing is owed, and the coffee has never tasted better.
What the bay does at first light
The gulf side of the island sleeps in; the bay side clocks on. From a dock chair at six forty you get the working coast's whole morning shift: the grouper boats sliding out toward the pass in a loose file, engines at conversation volume, a heron auditing the seawall, the water going from pewter to green as the light finds it. Nobody performs anything. It is simply a coast leaving for work.
The show asks nothing of its audience. By the time the house stirs and the first child appears asking about breakfast, the fleet is a line of dots on the gulf and the bay has handed the day over to the paddleboards.
Why the first morning matters
Holidays are remembered in set pieces but lived in registers, and the first morning sets it. A week that opens with forty unhurried minutes and a working coast for company starts from calm and spends the rest of its days returning there. It is the cheapest luxury on our entire coast and it cannot be bought separately, only arrived at.
Ask for a dock when you tell us the dates. Not for the boat, though the boat is a fine reason. For the six forty shift, and the coffee that goes with it.
